Hi. I wanted to welcome you to our wrestling family. Notice I said family, not program or team. I say that because we are a family. I always say, when I wrestled in high school I had 13 moms. In fact, 37 years later, I still talk to some of my "wrestling moms". I still talk to multiple "wrestling buddies". Even though I played other sports longer then I wrestled, I never built those kind of relationships thru any other sport. Our goal is to create these relationships for you and your wrestler.
This is just one of the things that makes wrestling unique.
It will not take you long to realize my passion and love for this sport and the kids. I have been blessed with the most incredible group of parents. They all share my passion and commitment to this family and most importantly, the kids.
We would love to have you and your child join us.
All of our coaches are volunteers. That is how we keep the registration fees low. We offer a 4 month long season for just over $100. That includes your singlet, shorts and shirt. Your wrestler gets to keep all three after the season.
You will notice that we practice up to 4 times a week (depending on the class). Please do not get overwhelmed. Everything is optional. The way you improve in wrestling is time on the mat. Most families are very busy with multiple kids in sports so we offer practice over multiple nights so you can work around the things on your schedule. If you can't make one day, you still have other days to come that week.
I always say wrestling is the greatest sport in the world. I can easily give many generalized and over used reasons why. It builds character, self esteem, physical fitness, pride, determination. All of the things you hear about every sport. It is indisputable that wrestlers are the most well conditioned athletes. That leaves the other characteristics. In light of this, I have always tried to get it down to a distinct reason or act that differentiates wrestling and proves how it creates these characteristics in your child. Something that no other sport has. I have finally figured it out and managed to put it into words.
THE HANDSHAKE:
After years of wrestling, being a wrestling parent and a coach, I have determined the handshake is what makes wrestling so special. But Dan...all sports have handshakes. What is the big deal with wrestling?
Westling is a one on one sport. You are out there on your own. No teammate to back you up or blame for missing a catch, throw or block. After a game, In all team sports you just walk down a line giving high fives to a line of faceless people on the other team. Most importantly, you have your team in front and in back of you. You are a faceless person in a group.
In wrestling you just spent the last 3 - 7 minutes getting beat physically, mentally and emotionally in front of everyone. Now, you have to stand up and look directly into the eye of the person who just dominated you in every possible way AND you have to shake their hand, not bump gloves or high five but actually shake their hand in front of everyone, BY YOURSELF. This is expected at every level from the youngest youth to the oldest international wrestler. If you have never had to do this, you have no idea how hard it is and what it teaches you.
If you want to teach your child important life lessons and how to persevere, how to react in the face of adversity and hard times, I can promise you there is nothing better then the, post match, wrestling handshake. It also motivates like nothing else. It is far better to be on the winning side of that handshake and the determination that your wrestler develops to ensure they are on the winning side will amaze you.
